Lakers Rebuilding

Mike Krzyzewski having turned down the job, the Lakers yesterday announced Rudy Tomjanovich their new head coach. In winning back-to-back championships coaching the Houston Rockets, Tomjanovich proved his ability to construct solid teams. This is the kind of basketball I want the Lakers to play.

Overshadowing this hiring is news of a trade that would send Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat for Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, and Caron Butler. Meanwhile, Kobe's situation is still in flux. The Lakers could be on the verge of watchability again.

This bothers me. It was so easy to hate the Lakers, now they are getting players from a team I enjoyed watching. That Indiana Miami series was fun, and Dwayne Wade is electrifying. But Odom and Butler were key cogs to that team, and trading them to the Lakers for a player I hate... ugh...

Shaq has been on the decline starting with his key toe injury. But Pat Riley has to have a big man: Kareem, Ewing, Mourning, and now O'Neal.

I've been wary of Riley since just before he resigned from the Knicks. The best move he's made at Miami was stepping down as coach. If Shaq comes to town, will Riley be back?

Not a big fan of Odom and Grant, but maybe they'll work better for Rudy.

I'm not speaking to the NBA until they roll back the 50+% teams making the playoffs mess ... wouldn't it be great to see a championship series between the two best teams from each conference (so that the schedule meant something)? I know, I'm a cranky curmodgeon (my wife tells me all the time) ... but the NBA and NHL have polluted MLB and the NFL ... they might as well pull names from a hat the way playoffs are structured these days ... not that I wanna rant, but ...

Okay, I'll stop now ... Charlie Stella

I agree the playoffs are bloated. I didn't know when any of the early-round NBA games were on TV. Expansion has spread the talent too thin.

The only good thing out of this season was Detroit winning the title playing the right way.

Well, Maybe next year I can afford the price of 2 Laker tickets and actually see a game vs. watching on TV. This whole business of sports has really turned me off from going to any type of games. Add to this the attitude of many of today's players towrd the kids, who see these athlete as heroes and then to find out that many of them want you to pay for an autograph, enough!

Charlie, you are right on the money. No wonder I like you.

My dream would be someday that educators will be the superstars who get paid maybe a 6 figure salary for educating kids instead of these guys earning multi-million dollar contracts for shooting hoops. Hey, that's my opinion, I could be wrong.
