"Whatever Kobe Wants..."

Basketball news over the long weekend centered on the Lakers' offer to make Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski the highest-paid coach of any U.S. sport. Kobe Bryant apparently said he'd like to play for Coach K, and the team looks to be bending anywhichway for No. 8.

What I want to happen:
  • Coach K turns down the Lakers job and stays at Duke. He is one of the last reasons today's high school phenoms consider college before the NBA.

  • The Lakers say goodbye to Kobe and Shaq and honestly rebuild. As it stands, they are projected to put exactly the same team on the floor next season, only without the Zen Master to keep everything in balance.

You want to know what I think about this? Why I'm torn? Well... I hate Duke... hate 'em... and Coach K leaving, as classy a guy as he's been for college BB, would seriously hurt Duke's chances of ever being good again. But... there's the domino theory to consider... How's this for conspiracy? Coach K leaves and take the rightful heir to the throne Johnny Dawkins with him to be an assistant, so... the Duke alumni--in a friggin' panic over who could take over--spurn ND coach and former Duke assistant Mike Brey (who's done a considerably good job at the hated ND ((Join a conference you bastards))) for the more sexy pick of Michigan coach (and former SHU coach, and former Duke assistant) Tommy Amaker... So... Michigan is now stuck without a coach, and they come a callin' to the man who came in second for the job when Amaker got it--current Rutgers coach Gary Waters, leaving my beloved alma mater coachless this late in the recruiting period and just as we were starting to build something... and I get to sit through another losing season with my season tickets... So, yeah, I'm torn.

My conspiracy's for naught... Coach K stays. This just in.
