Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy is the latest celebrity to assert she isn't a role model. If saying so only made it so, the perceived pressure would be off.
The truth is anyone may be a role model to someone else. Often enough, one never even knows it. I agree with McCurdy that people shouldn't model themselves after anyone entirely. Just as we think of ourselves as flawed, individual heroes are bound to let us down in one aspect or another.
I aspire to qualities cherry-picked from all sorts of people, some I know personally, some historical figures, and yes, some athletes and actors. I've decided what I admire and what I don't about these people. The ideal I strive for isn't tied to any one of them. I'm shaping my own identity, not conforming to someone else's.

Lee Goldberg and Joel Goldman Launching Brash Books

My friends Lee Goldberg and Joel Goldman, veteran writers and successful self-publishers, now turn their talents to publishing "the best crime novels in existence" under the bold banner Brash Books.
Getting to know Lee and Joel over the years, I've found we have much the same taste in books. Lee sent me some Brash review copies, and it's great to see so many gems brought back to print and ebook with a passion that could only come from two readers who loved them.
Brash Books launches in September with twenty-eight reprints and two original novels. Some of my favorite authors in the launch are Bill Crider, Gar Anthony Haywood, Tom Kakonis, Dick Lochte, and Michael Stone. I also look forward to reading some titles that, up to now, I could only wish to find.

Jeter's Final All-Star Game

Once more, the game of baseball slowed for Derek Jeter, the players waiting as the Target Field crowd gave him an ovation. Then, as FOX's microphones picked up one heckler chanting, "Over-rated," Jeter answered with a double and scored on Mike Trout's triple to give the American League an early lead en route to a 5-3 victory.

Declaration of Coexistence

My family emigrated to the United States in late 1974, in part because martial law had been declared in the Philippines. Everyone has nits to pick with the state of the Union. Nothing is run as well as it should be, but the country was founded on noble ideals. Liberty for all doesn't mean one's rights can come at the expense of others' rights. It means everyone's differences deserve equal respect. The United States' greatest virtue is it will always strive toward equal respect.
