'Twas the Day After Christmas

© by Gerald So | 1:00 AM

Hope you all had a good one. This year my large extended family came to my house. All things considered, my nuclear family—Mom, brother, and I—had little to do last-minute. Also, the size of the collected group meant I could duck out and nap whenever I wanted. Temperature around 40 F meant easy travel for everyone.

Corny as it sounds, our gathering for food, drink, and laughs is enough for me. Two Amazon gift cards were enough. You might be surprised how seldom I've gotten books or anything writing-related over the years. Then again, I might not like everyone asking, "How's the writing going?"

THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

© by Gerald So | 4:00 AM

I was glad to be in a group of twenty friends and friends of friends last night for the touted final chapter of the Skywalker saga. My experience of the trilogy has been mixed. As an adult, there's no way I can embrace movies to the utter extent I did as a child.

That said, spoiling nothing, one scene in The Rise of Skywalker changed my previously-low opinion of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver) and had me rooting for him in the climactic moments. I saw this turnaround coming for years, sure I wouldn't buy it, yet I did. I can't deny that, no matter how many other aspects of the movie and the trilogy I disliked.

For better or worse, Star Wars has grown beyond George Lucas and its original fans. On that note, I can and have imagined more adventures of the Skywalkers and the Jedi than I'll ever see on a screen, the best gift a piece of pop culture can give.

Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths

© by Gerald So | 3:30 AM

As successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been, DC's live-action superhero broadcast TV shows have built up to epic crossovers year after year. Of most interest to me, this year's event includes Kevin Conroy as an aged Bruce Wayne, Tom Welling as Smallville's Clark Kent, and Tom Ellis as Lucifer.

Going into a month-long hiatus, all but one of DC's infinite Earths has been wiped out. I don't know how or which heroes will rebound, but in the meantime, I thought Welling's scene was the perfect cap to Smallville.

Earth-1's Iris West (Candice Patton) and Earth-38's Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch) travel to Earth-167 to recruit a Kryptonian paragon. Earth-38's Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) interferes, but Welling's Clark, having given up his powers to have a family with Lois (Erica Durance), foils Lex his largely unspoken confident presence.

Kudos to writer-producers Don Whitehead & Holly Henderson and Caroline Dries.
