Nineteen

Today is the nineteenth anniversary of this blog. In the beginning, it was much like my Twitter, a collection of random things I was mildly interested in. I've always preferred blogging to microblogging, but Twitter's recent upheaval has helped me remember that.

I guess I'll be here as long as Blogger is. If you've followed me from the beginning, a special thank you.

I've Finally Seen Casablanca (1942)

Warner Bros. released Casablanca on 4K disc in November and I bought it for a bargain in December. So many subsequent movies have paid it homage, but I'm still impressed with its universal themes and how much of Rick's feeling for Ilsa came across nonverbally, proving a man's man could be so emotional.

My Post-Twitter World

I created a Mastodon account two months ago and have not only tweeted much less but also resisted posting to Mastodon as often as I did Twitter.

As I blogged previously, I like that Mastodon is decentralized, not for sale, and not driven by an algorithm, but in taking stock of my Twitter activity, I realize I tweeted a lot without thinking. Many of my tweets had no lasting relevance. I don't want to fall into the same habit on Mastodon.

You may argue it's fine; social media posts don't have to be especially meaningful or relevant. Granted, but I argue any communication should aim for meaning and relevance. If not, what are we communicating? Why are we communicating?

Spending more time away from social media, I don't feel the need to have my say on current, fleeting events. I still have the ideology developed over the years, only I'm not expressing it in short social media posts, and it has made all the difference.

What's New?

© by Gerald So | 3:00 AM

Because I don't party on New Year's Eve, I can spend the wee hours of New Year's Day soberly reflecting on what new means. This year starts during an old week. As much as I may want to be physically fresher, I'm not. As corny as it sounds, making the most of a new year is about keeping an open mind, able to approach familiar obstacles in new ways, or at least to continue an approach that makes progress in the long run.
