NBA Coaching News

After the worst season of his career, Pat Riley has stepped down as coach of the Miami Heat. He will stay on as team president and has promoted 37-year-old Erik Spoelstra to head coach.

Meanwhile, rumor has it the Charlotte Bobcats will hire Larry Brown as head coach, having let go of Sam Vincent this season.

When Riley shoved Stan Van Gundy out the door in Miami he must have signed a deal with the devil: win another championship but endure a year like this.

I feel good for SVG, though - his team is doing pretty well with the New Superman at center.

Now Avery Johnson is gone - though it was the players who deserved it (Dirk and Brandon Bass excepted). Starting center Erick Dampier's line from last night: 25 minutes, zero points, zero rebounds. And he earns $11 million per year through 2011.

I have to admit I was rooting for the Hornets and Coach of the Year Byron Scott against Dallas and coach-killer Jason Kidd.
